Polygons are the flat, geometric shapes (usually triangles or quadrilaterals) that make up the surface of a 3D model. They define the model’s structure and appearance by connecting vertices (points in 3D space) to form faces. The more polygons a model has, the more detailed and smoother its surface can appear. However, models with too many polygons can become heavy and affect performance, especially in applications like 3D rendering or real-time visualization. Reducing the number of polygons while maintaining detail is often necessary to optimize a model’s performance.
